Saranac Lake Winter Carnival

January 24th, 2018

Winter can be a challenging time for people elsewhere in the country but in the Tri-Lakes, we have embraced everything it has to offer. With Lake Placid hosting multiple Olympics  and Saranac Lake having a 10-day Winter Carnival. Winter is one of the most exciting season for locals and tourists.

The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival has been running since 1897 making it one of the oldest traditions in the region. While it has not been held every year early on, it made its comeback in 1955 providing a great sense of community that is inviting to everyone who wants to experience the splendor of the region. This 10-day festival has something for everyone.

The week begins with a coronation of the King and Queen, who are two local citizens who have contributed to the Saranac Lake community through volunteer work. They are joined by a Prince and Princess who are two local college students, a Court featuring elected high school students and six Pages who are elementary students.

The week features sporting events, concerts, theatrical performance, movie nights and the annual Rotary Club Variety Show. There are also some events that you would not see anywhere else like the fry pan toss where girls to women try to throw a frying pan as far as they can. The fry pan toss is like a discus throw but with a frying pan. This event along with many others can be see at the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival website.

The celebration revolves around the Ice Palace on the shore of Lake Flower just minutes away from Lake Placid. After coronation there are fireworks at the palace to signal the start of the festivities.  This is repeated the final day of carnival to close out the celebration while having a slideshow of all the events that happened throughout the week. The palace is built by volunteers who create the castle and other sculptures based on the years theme what is Adirondack Festival. Throughout the week, this is the central hub of events with people taking pictures of the one of a kind landmark. This is truly a community affair where no matter where you are from you become a part of our Tri-Lakes family.
