The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival is an integral part of Saranac Lake’s history. This event provides a break in the winter to celebrate outdoor sports and game, the history and the future of Saranac Lake. Each year there is a new theme with this year’s being Prehistoric Park. The themes have varied over the years with everything from Super Hero’s and Villains to the Groovy 60’s. These themes become creative ideas for designing the ice sculptures, events and shows. The ice sculptures can be found at the Ice Palace what is the focal point of the week-long event.

The week begins with a coronation of the King and Queen, who are two local citizens who have contributed to the Saranac Lake community through volunteer work. They are joined by a Prince and Princess who are two local college students, a Court featuring elected high school students and six Pages who are elementary students.

The week features sporting events, concerts, theatrical performance, movie nights and the annual Rotary Club Variety Show. There are also some one of a kind events like the fry pan toss where girls and women try to throw a frying pan as far as they can or arctic golf where local groups set up a mini putt course out of snow and ice.
